Pedaling Toward Discovery

PedalingIn a geology lab in VCU’s Eugene P. and Lois E. Trani Center for Life Sciences, about a dozen middle schoolers wielded bright yellow tire levers as they practiced fixing flat bike tires.

Office of Sustainability staff shared their knowledge of urban cycling, gardening and other aspects of green living during afternoon sessions of the summer Discovery camp at the Division of Community Engagement’s Mary and Frances Youth Center.

Discovery offers in-depth experiences in STEM, arts and health sciences to middle school youth while encouraging career exploration in a university setting,” said Alyssa King, program specialist at the center.

Each week campers chose from six different classes taught by Virginia Commonwealth University faculty, staff, students and local professionals.
