Youth Participate in Paralympic Games with Lobs and Lessons

Fifty-three youth participating in the Mary and Frances Youth Center's Lobs & Lessons program got the chance to experience tennis as someone using a wheelchair would May 19-21 through a new partnership with Sportable, a non-profit organization in Richmond dedicated to providing adaptive sport and recreation opportunities, events and competitions.

Representatives from Sportable kicked off each day with a presentation about their organization and paralympic games, followed by a Q&A session with a participating athlete. The youth then hit the tennis courts in wheelchairs and were taught how to maneuver the chairs, roll with a racquet in hand and learn the basic differences in the game. The youth practiced drills and playing matches from their new position on the court.

Lobs & Lessons is a youth enrichment program that strengthens life skills, promotes academics and creates a path to higher education through the sport of tennis.
